Projektbeschreibung

The project creates a form of representation of Trypillia–Cucuteni culture, a prehistoric civilization that flourished 6000 years ago in present-day Ukraine, Moldov, and Romania. The “table of curiosities” reimagines the colonial “cabinet of curiosities” where objects were removed from context and displayed behind glass. Central to the display is an interactive mechanical and augmented reality-based installation that invites visitors to gather around a table and explore scans and 3D models of artifacts along with the historical and scientific information they carry. Rather than presenting original objects removed from their archaeological contexts, the exhibition prioritizes digital repatriation and ethical engagement with cultural heritage. Instead, the exhibit travels, bringing history to new audiences with a focus on accessibility, interpretation, and dialogue.

Short text: The project dives into the Trypillia–Cucuteni culture, a prehistoric civilization that flourished 6000 years ago in present-day Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania. As no record of the language survived, artifacts remain the sole testimony to the lives of their creators and the rich culture. The “table of curiosities” reimagines the colonial “cabinet of curiosities,” where objects were removed from context and displayed behind glass. The exhibition is centered around an interactive mechanical table inviting visitors to engage with 3D models, scans, and representations through touch, motion, and augmented reality. This approach reflects an ethical commitment: to preserve cultural heritage in its original territory and resist extractive museum practices. Instead, the exhibit travels, bringing history to new audiences while promoting contemporary values of accessibility, respect, and shared heritage.
