What are the relationships between what we see and perceive of our physical surroundings and how they are depicted? Is a place perceived differently in its physical form than through its visual reproduction or simulation? In a two-part publication, Moving Through Images questions the influence of images and visual reproductions of physical surroundings on our gaze and perception. It oscillates between experience and image, between two kinds of spaces, one that is perceived physically and one that is perceived virtually. On the one hand a tool for walking aimlessly in physical space, acting as an “impulse generator” to change one’s view of their immediate surroundings. On the other hand, it is an image and a space in its own right, which wants to be traversed in arbitrary ways thus allowing to reflect on the connections to its (physical) models. Browsing a book is to be seen as an analogy to walking a city. One always has only a section of a larger entity in front of one’s eyes—a street through which one is moving, a sentence or a page that one is reading. The often seemingly random correlations between individual fragments always have to be discovered first.
