Data is not neutral. While air pollution causes millions of premature deaths, it's not acknowledged as an environmental injustice. The Gaslighter 727 bachelor project, adopting speculative design through a decolonizing lens, challenges air pollution standards and the regulations tied to them. The project conducts a matterphorical case study situated in Almaty, Kazakhstan to explore alternative sensing systems. It departs from traditional modes of knowledge production to make visible injustices that stay behind numeric representations. Gaslighter 727 is a mixed-media installation, featuring a platform prototype with curated research materials that invites to reflect and reevaluate established norms in air quality monitoring.
