Projektbeschreibung
"And if the wiring brings previously separate data flows onto a single digitally standardized sequence of numbers, any medium can be transformed into any other. With numbers, nothing is impossible." – Friedrich Kittler
This quote illustrates the core idea behind the interactive multimedia installation memoryflash: any arbitrary file on a computer holds countless possibilities of interpretation, of which, however, only one is made visible at a time – determined exclusively by conventions such as file types or encoding standards.
Memoryflash loads arbitrary data from a USB flash drive into a 2-dimensional matrix of bytes, which can be navigated with a joystick acting as a pointer. The currently active sector of bytes is simultaneously interpreted and played back as text, pixels, and sound.
The exhibition features 20 USB flash drives containing both the source files and assets of various free and open-source video games.
